Godot is free, open source, MIT-licensed, and has no royalties ✅. The current stable release is Godot 4.7.2 (Aug 18, 2026) ✅. It's a great engine for 2D games and small 3D ones. The catch: AI tools sometimes write old Godot 3 code that breaks in Godot 4.

The short pick

Claude Code, pointed at your Godot project folder. It can read your scenes and scripts (.tscn, .gd are plain text), write GDScript, and you run the game in the Godot editor to test. Included with Claude Pro $20/mo ✅.

The trick that matters more than the tool: tell the AI your exact Godot version every time (see below).

Alternatives

Tool Good for Price (checked Oct 16, 2026)
OpenAI Codex Same agent-in-folder idea, if you already pay for ChatGPT Included with ChatGPT Plus $20/mo ✅
Cursor See diffs to your .gd files in an editor before accepting Free; Plus $8/mo; Premium $30/mo ✅
GitHub Copilot Autocomplete while you write GDScript yourself Free (2,000 completions/mo); Pro $10/mo ✅

How to start

  1. Download Godot 4.7.x from godotengine.org. Create a new project. Put it in git.
  2. Create a file in the project root called AGENTS.md (or CLAUDE.md) with: This is a Godot 4.7 project using GDScript (not C#). Use Godot 4 syntax only: @export, @onready, signal.connect(callable), CharacterBody2D with velocity + move_and_slide() (no arguments). Never use Godot 3 APIs (KinematicBody2D, export var, yield). Don't edit .tscn files by hand unless I ask; tell me what to do in the editor instead.
  3. Ask for one thing: "Write a player.gd for a CharacterBody2D with left/right movement, jump, and gravity."
  4. Attach the script in the editor, press F5, test. Commit.
  5. Next mechanic. Repeat.
